Launch of the new ‘FireSkills Employability Award’ in Kilmarnock...

On Friday 27th September, in the afternoon I joined other Elected Members and the Provost at the launch of the new ‘FireSkills Employability Award’ (SCQF Level 4) at Kilmarnock Community Fire Station being run by Ayrshire College and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

We were treated to a ‘drill ground’ presentation from the first eleven young people to take the course, and had the chance to find out from them as well as the instructors involved about the wide range of skills which they have developed over the last week.

‘FireSkills’ is a flexible programme which seeks to engage young people in a series of challenging activities where, working alongside trained Firefighters, they can learn and develop Coreskills such as communication, problem solving and team working. It consists of a series of individual sessions that are based on fire fighter ‘drills,’ adapted to provide a unique learning experience for young people.

By engaging with young people, many of whom struggle with a more formal education, or have experienced challenging life journeys, Ayrshire College and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service working in partnership, can demonstrate their commitment to contribute to National priorities such as making our communities safer, youth justice and education, and lifelong learning, among others.

"It was absolutely fantastic to see what these first eleven young people have achieved over the last week, they should all be so proud of themselves - Well done to you all."
